The Seven Sweaters You Need This Fall

Kristen Berry

Let’s nip that cold-weather wardrobe rut in the bud before it even has a chance to start. Consider building yourself a versatile capsule collection of cozy knits that will keep you both warm and chic. Here are the seven sweaters that will get you through the season in style, with options under $100.

A Knit Jacket

Part sweater, part jacket, this awesome knit hybrid is a perfect layering piece. I love popping one over a dress to fall-ify it a bit. The moto details also give this sweater just a bit of edge.

A Fun Fine-Knit Sweater

“Thin sweaters” are a constant on my fall fashion shopping lists, but they often go unpurchased because they’re too simple to catch my eye. But if I find one in a bold color, a print, or with embellishment (or all three, like this bad boy), I snap it up. They’re a great everyday piece, incredibly versatile, and won’t take up a ton of room in your fall/winter suitcase.

A Classic Turtleneck

Oh yes, friends. The classic ribbed turtleneck that you probably owned in the 90s (and, earlier, in the 70s) is back. I’m personally boycotting the majority of the 90s fashion resurgence, but there’s a reason why this particular look keeps coming back in style. It’s sort of like fall’s answer to the basic white tee. And the gold buttons on the sleeve of this version makes it feel just a bit special.

A Pullover with Personality

Is there anything more foolproof than a pullover? I love to infuse a bit of interest by selecting one with a fun print or an interesting texture, like either of these fab finds. While you can definitely wear them alone with pants or a cute skirt, you can also play around with layering them -- over a shirt, over a dress, or even under a blazer, if the sweater is thin enough.

A Long Cardi

Long cardigan = instant autumn chic. Especially in a just-fallen-leaf shade, like this little number. I also tend to go for a slim cut, like this one, as it adds a lovely warm layer without packing on extra bulk.

A Tunic

I love a luxurious long sweater. It’s sort of like wearing a stylish snuggie. The asymmetrical cut of this top adds a bit of interest, and always provides a flattering shape. This will look fantastic paired with leggings or skinny jeans and a pair of kick-ass boots.

A Stylish Poncho

If the word “poncho” brings to mind the awkward fashion in the first episode of “Ugly Betty,” you’re not alone. But the poncho is having a seriously stylish moment right now. Thanks to the exposed arms, they’re a great layering piece for fall. I particularly like this version from Urban Outfitters -- the finer weave will help you stay cool, and won’t add extra bulk to your shape.

What are you planning to add to your knitwear collection this fall?
