Proportion Play (& Five Instagrammers Who Do it Best)

There’s a definite trend when it comes to what I’m “liking” on Instagram lately (@FauxFancy). I’m so inspired by people who aren’t afraid to play with unexpected proportions, using extra long, cropped and unexpectedly shaped items to create a bit of drama.

Most of my current clothes play it safe, proportion-wise -- practical pieces that aren’t too short, aren’t too long. And I’m officially on a mission to change that. Playing with proportions is a great way to add instant interest to a look and elevate your #OOTD without blowing your budget.

Here are some of the looks I’m loving, the folks who put them together, and the pieces I’m looking to add to my closet.

Go Long

Take away the ankle-dusting length of Krystal Bick’s coat, or the ultra-full sidewalk-grazing cut of Blair Eadie’s pants, for instance, and you’d still have a chic outfit. But it’s the unexpected proportions that make the look a bit more special. The same goes for Claire Marshall’s cozy weekend-perfect cardi, and the full dress-olive coat combo worn by Blair Eadie. A voluminous long-on-long look can overwhelm your frame, but because of the cut out panels on Blair’s dress, the look just works.

I love how Shiona Turini and Aimee Song take something potentially incredibly revealing and scandalous – like a crop top or a mini skirt – and make it look not only appropriate, but chic. Shiona rocks an abbreviated top like no one else. By only exposing a small sliver of skin, and typically sticking to a monochrome palette, she keeps her outfits looking both fresh and interesting and somehow also timeless and classic. And while pairing thigh-high boots with a teeny-weeny skirt can initially read pre-makeover Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman,” layering an oversized cardi on top immediately grounds the look. And combining a pair of culottes with a matching blazer actually seems right for work this spring.
